While spinal stenosis of the spine is a serous condition, take heart in the fact that you wont die from it. There are a few different treatment options. First if you are overweight, losing some would be recommended by your doctor. If it is more serious than that there are 2 procedures. A laminectomy is basically where they go in and widen the canal that your spinal cord passes through. A foraminotomy is basically the same procedure but involves a different part of the bone. I hope this helps.

This condition is not to be taken lightly permanent neurological damage can result. This is the condition I was always warned about with anyone with a disc problem. In your case it sounds like the stenosis is pressing on your cord. If they have discussed any surgical options with you then listen to what they have to say.
