If it gets infected then it will be incredibly sore to touch. Even more than it ois now. It should be kinda pink/red for a few days. Plaster it in antiseptic cream as often as you can. If it forms a normal scab without any pus then that’s normal. Think of it as a big cut, and what your body does normally to repair it.

Warning signs would be

Swelling so the skin feels really tight and really red hot
Pus oozing from your skin around the area
If it smells (sign of sepsis)

Just b/c your tattoo is red, does not mean it is infected. If you have sensitive skin,or were tatooed in a sensitive area, then it will be red longer.
Usually an infected tattoo, youd have red streaks streaking up off the tattoo, it would feel "hot",be swollen, and pussing.

DONT USE ANY AINTIBIOTIC CREAMS ON IT OR A&D on it!

Otherwise your body has to take its time healing and accpting the tattoo. Usually about 3 weeks for it to heal, sometimes longer.
Make sure your not over caring for it. Wash it 2-3 times a day with mild anti-bacterial soap.Pat dry, Dont use lotion on it right away let dry out and scab up. You can use Aquaphor on it for the first few days. then begin lotion after a 4-5 days.

RE:
If a tattoo gets all red, does it mean it's infected? And what should they do?

Well I would say it would depend on how new the tattoo is. If it is new it could be infected. Try a good antibiotic ointment, not neosporin, but bactracin. If it looks really bad call the person that done the tattoo and ask what they would suggest you use.

if the area around the tattoo is red and it doesnt go away after a day or so or if it gets worse go to the DR immediately... I had that happen with one if mine. I thought it was just skin irritation but it didnt go away and I ended up needing antibiotics

it will go away in a few hours, put a&d ointment on the tat for the 1st 2 days then lotion it up gently, don't over lotion cause it can cause scabs to fall and make the tattoo look like there is a hole in it. goty a tat 2 weeks ago.

Probably just ingrown hair. Nothing serious. I had a simular problem when I got mine done. I would seek the advice of your artist or doctor if the problem persists more than 3 weeks. No popping or scratching! This could damage your tattoo.

How new is it? It will stay red and puffy for a few days and it will scab up. Dont pick the scab it will fall off when its ready. If its been more than a few days I would go back to whoever tatd you they will know whats up with it.
