I want to replace my mom's countertop with something that looks nice from Home Depot - the cheap formica stuff they have now. My question is how do I deal with the corner? Do I miter it or butt end it? I'm sure this is not the right language but I hope you know what I mean. The counter is L-shaped and I don't know how to manage the corner. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Home Depot does sell pre-mitered Formica counter tops. They are in 45 deg cuts, left and right, and in a few in stock colors as to give you the look you want. They are in different sizes too.

Have you thought of using tile?
It easier than you might think.

the other reading I have done says use a miter saw on Formica.
Can you not find a piece of Formica wide enough to cover the widest point and cut the L notch out from there?
That way you could possibly avoid the seem all together.

we did this in our house. Go to LOWES! They have countertops that are already mitered!!! They will tell you what to use to glue the pieces together, and they also have the iron on end pieces for the sides that are exposed. It was a very easy job thanks to their help.
Do not go to Home depot for the countertop. They will not have mitered pieces.
By the way, I believe that each piece of countertop was about 90.00 Hope that helps!

If you are a do-it-yourselfer with skill, I'd eyeball it and see if the waste of material from a miter is worth it. It does look more professional and may allow you to get a tighter joint than butting finished ends.

better make sure your walls are a true 90 degrees first if it is than you can buy a premitered one if not you will have to custom miter it
