I used to work at for a vet for 5 years. He told me that it's because the dog needs more vitamins in his diet, and he would recommend that the dog be put on a premium dog food. I would suggest either Science Diet, or Iams.....something like that. They also have sample packs that you can buy, or maybe even get for free. It may take as long as a week for this to solve itself. Best of luck to you.

There could be several reasons for this....possibly a lack of something in the dogs food, especially if not being fed a high quality diet. Boredom. Puppies often will do this and will continue doing it if not taught otherwise. This is one good reason NOT to let their waste "waste away" on the ground. Pick it up and the dog won't be tempted to eat it. Sometimes a dog will quickly eat their waste for fear of being punished...this could happen if the mistake occurs in the home. Scold gently...train gently...results are much better. I have learnd with the one "poop eater" that I had, that adding pumpkin to her diet stopped the bad habit. She had been left in a crate too often before we got her and developed this habit. I always pick up after her outside, but occasionally mistakes happen in the house...especially in bitterly cold weather. She's a toy...4 lbs....so cold weather does not agree with her too well. Since adding the pumpkin, which she loves, she no longer eats her waste. Something about the pumpkin makes the poop repugnant to them.

In the wild before dogs became domesticated they would turn around & eat their own stools so other wild animals couldn't track them. For some reason dogs still do it today. It is not uncommon. It doesn't mean that their lacking something in their diet. There are a couple of products that you can add to the food so that the stool is undesirable...taste bitter. One is Deter & the other is Forbid. Both work really well.

I've had a couple of chihuahua's that used to do that. It's called Coprophagia. Youcan got to the pet store and get pills that will make them stop. I've had vets tell me it's because their are not getting vitamins and other vets told me they do it just because. These pills really helped. They cost about $9. It might to to put them on apremium food but it didn't with my dogs that can also be exspensive

My puppy used to eat rabbit poop and his own. My dog did it because he was hungry and teething. If you feed him a little then give him something to chew on he might stop. If he doesn't sorry.

It is a good source of protein.
The vet told me.

My Mom was an assistant vet for a few years. She often was asked this question from pet owners. Pets often eat their feces because of a vitamin deficiency in their diet. Try switching dog food. Good luck!!
