I have a back molar the recently started a slight throbbing off and on. Odd thing is that it is not sensitive to cold or heat...that I know of. It is slightly sensitive to cold air but only after long periods of exposure. I feel a cavity, it doesn't feel wide but I know it can still go deep. It is not sensitive to tapping. I have a dental appointment in 2 wks but in the meantime I am worried about the outcome. Does it "sound" like I may need a root canal more or possibly just a filling?

Well it is hard to say because there is no way of knowing how deep it is. Often though root canal patients are very sensitive to hot and cold, and it is also a good sign that it isn't sensitive to tapping. It sounds more likely you will need a filling, but there's no for sure answer until you get an xray. Good luck, and until your appt keep plenty of Tylenol on hand!
