My Yorkie was 14 when she had an accident and I had over $3000 in vet bills for surgeries and all for her. She lived another good year, walked better than she had in a long time, and we got that much more time together. She wouldn't give up on me, and she trusted me to not give up on her. It's our responsibility to take the very best care of our animals; putting them down because of convienence is wrong and is a sign of a piss-poor pet owner who should never own another pet. I've seen the difference between convienence and medically-necessary. You did the right thing. Good for your and spouse.

Owning a dog is a responsibility. If it is inconvenient for you to have to pay money t keep him healthy, then you shouldn't have a pet. He has an injury, not a life threatening illness. If it's a matter of money, keep in mind they also charge to put the animal down. I just paid $400 dollars to diagnose and have my cat put down due to a blood clot that paralyzed her. Pets aren't cheap. Some places will set up a payment plan for you so that you don't have to pay it all at once. And if worse comes to worse, there are animal wellfare shelters that will take your dog, get him the necessary medical attention, and then adopt him out to someone that will be able to take care of him. And if you do this, don't get another one. Dogs aren't like blenders. If they break, you can't just toss it out and buy a new one because it's cheaper than repairing it. I'm sorry if I'm being a bit harsh here, but I don't think your dogs life should even be a question in this case.

If you have a kid that broke its leg, you wouldnt put him down. You did the right thing. I think of my dog just like my daughter. I know that honestly, money would not be an option if something happened to her. Now if she was gonna be in pain for the rest of her life, that would be different. But dont worry about what she thinks, she obviously isnt a good pet owner.

No. Clearly, you are worried about money. Ask your vet if you could sign a contract and make payment arrangements. Could you borrow some of it from a relative or friend? Or just borrow $100.00 from 15 people, so if you are slow to pay it back, at least it would only be $100.00 each - and not someone after you for $1,500.00.
Your question makes ME question the depth of love and committment to your dog. Is it time to find a home for him/her where she/he can get the care it needs? Rather than killing it. Maybe the most loving thing you could do is see if you could find a better home for your dog. I understand you have money issues . . really, I do. But I think you have some other issues about having this dog that are not just monetarily based.
Good luck.

If I couldn't afford to have him treated, I would ask the vet if they knew of anyone that would be willing to adopt the dog and have him fixed up, or if the vet would be willing to take the dog.
As for your MIL, don't sweat it. Just let her know that the decision and the deed has already been done, and no amount of b*tching is going to change it(or have any influence on a similar situation in the future). Just be a little bit more tactful than me:D

As a pet owner, you are responsible and obligated to take care of him just as you would any member of the family!! If you have to ask this question, you shouldnt even have a pet and much less a dog!!! Dont you think your dog would do absolutely anything for you? I would do anything and everything to save my pets life! Its an injury that you caused and isnt $1500 worth giving him the rest of his life? You really suck and I feel sorry for the dog. Why dont you call the spca and see if they can help get him better and put him in a new home with people who will love him?

Yes, I would. Lots of ppl don't realize a pet is your best friend, your parents and your siblings all rolled up into one. I know that sounds really bad, but it is real and true. I miss all the dogs we have had for years and had to put down due to illness brought about by old age. You just be happy you have your friend and know you did what you could and you have had your friend for years after the injury.

I wouldn't even have to think about it. I would pay the bill to get her fixed. We just spent $1400 on a dog that didn't make it and I would do it again knowing I'm giving him a chance to live and us a chance to have him for years to come. Our dog is part of our family and we would do just about anything to keep our dog happy & healthy.

You should try to find a person who loves pets and has money to help. Put an ad in your paper, or online.
You should only put down a dog if they are in extreme suffering and are generally unable to be consciously enjoying life. I've known a few dogs missing legs and such that were very happy and lived a long life. Do not put it down.

It would depend on the age of the dog. If it's an older dog, I would have to assess whether the surgery would be traumatic to the dog-beyond reason. Chances are, though, I would opt for the surgery. While I believe it is a very precise operation, I don't believe it is all that risky.
Money is no object when it comes to my dogs. They are my four legged babies.
