that's when you bring someone home one night or go to his/her house and have sex and then you probably don't hear from that person ever again or at least for a while

Traditionally, a one-night stand meant that a comedian or other performer was at a particular venue for only one night. This was in the days when many performers would travel from place to place and rarely stayed anywhere for long, either because they couldn't draw an audience for very long or because they were more interested in seeing what the next town was like. The term came to be applied to a type of date where you meet someone, go home and have sex with them, then separate in the morning and never have any contact with them again.
