Because by the time they're teenagers you'd hope they've learned how to cross a street properly, how to make themselves breakfast, how to clean up after themselves, etc. You also want them to be prepared to live life as an adult which, whether you like to admit to it or not, when they are teenagers is approaching quickly. They need to have the freedom to make small choices about their lives to prepare for the responsibility to make larger ones once they're out on their own. You can't live their lives for them, always keeping them in a bubble. They need the freedom to grow into adults. Besides, teens WANT more freedom. If you don't let them have a little freedom and show them that you trust them, they're going to do what they want behind your back. If they do it behind your back they won't feel comfortable coming to you when they make mistakes, and that could lead to bigger trouble. You need to know where they are, what they're doing, who they're with, but respect their choices, and let them know they can always come to you for advice or assistance.

Because if you don't give them freedom, they'll rebel, force you to give them more freedom through fights and being worn down.
It will cause much unhappiness between you and your teen. Let them have their needed freedom. instead of trying to stop them, why not be interested a little bit in their lives. Teens can have a lot to say sometimes if people listen.

Of course, if you want to continue holding your child's hand when crossing the street going to school until they graduate, more power to you.

how would one make a choice if they never got out to learn anything? the music thing could just depend on personality.

because they can take more care of themselves, and are older. If you told a 10 year old to drive a car they can't cause they usually aren't tall enough.

who cares? Just be involved in their lives! They desperately need the attention from their parents and if they don't get it, it usually turns into negative attention from their peers.
