It refers to verses in the bible. There are many references to bowing before the Lord. We kneel during prayer because we understand that God is the King of Kings. As we Honor God, we take positions that express who He is.

Romans 14:11-12 says, "And every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God."

Kneeling in prayer is a good way to humble oneself while petitioning the Father in heaven. Of course, kneeling in prayer is not always recommended because we can pray while driving, walking, sitting, even prone on the bed as necessary.

To approach God in total humility is an act of sacredness and trust that He wants of us.

When you do kneel I feel it is to humble yourself in front of God...like bowing down before a king. He is the king of kings...I pray kneeling and I pray in the car, while washing dishes when I am laying down.

Roman custom.
The ancient Romans knelt before their kings and royalty, as a sign of respect and servitude.
Paul, as a Roman citizen and evangeliser to the gentiles, adopted many features of Roman citizenry to his version of Christianity, which offered the common people an opportunity to be "citizens of Heaven". Remember, in ancinet Rome most people were not citizens and had no rights.
The Church of Rome crystalised this custom of kneeling, with ritual kneelings, genuflections, and other posturing during the mass.
