It was how they often greeted each other and a public demonstration of their faith. And it makes sense...if you believe that 'God' is the creator of everything, then you are a son of 'God'. I would add 'daughter' as an option, but Jews at the time of Jesus (if he ever existed) were generally extremely misognystic and certainly wouldn't allow their women to participate in any theological discussions, so it's unlikely that term was heard nearly as much. But the point remains, many modern Christians think Jesus' claim that he was 'Son of God' is testament to his divinity, but really it just indicates he was a practicing Jew around the time this whole legend got started.

What are your thoughts? What convinces you Jesus was divine or otherwise?

Sorry, no. The Religious Leaders of His Time considered Jesus a Blasphemer for calling Himself The Son of God,(John 10:36).

Also get over this stupid "supposed existence" crap ! There are Tons, and Tons of Historical Evidence that Jesus Christ Lived. Not the Least Josephus, a VERY Respected Jewish Historian, NOT A CHRISTIAN, who had quite a lot to say about Jesus Christ. There is also Roman Historical Documents that survive Today which mention Jesus.

Perfectly true. There are many examples of Egyptian/Judaic and cultic religious terms and expressions attached to Christianity. Christianity derived from a group of religious influences, there is a wealth of research material to indicate this. However every religion claims to be unique, and refutes much of its history that does not comply with the `new truth`. Many of the terms and expressions from Judaism have been adulterated to fit the truth, and have erroneously been accepted as `God`s word`. Believers want belief, a simple selfish fact, history and research that normalises the Palestinian episode will be rejected by rote. To understand Jesus you must think Judaic, anything else is adulteration.

Jesus didn't just call Himself "the Son of God", He informed us that He was and is the Son of God. God Himself confirmed this when Jesus was baptized when He informed us that "this is my Son in whom I Am well pleased". This is the testament to Jesus's divinity. Before Jesus was sent to bridge the gap that man had created with God, we learn in the old testament that Jesus would come, read in the Book of Isaiah (chapters 9 & 53). Jesus came to fulfill these scriptures. Many have come after Jesus claiming to be Jesus but their lives, their accomplishments don't even compare. Remember Jim Jones, Waco, Texas, Mr. Applewhite and whoever else. Jesus gave of Himself, all these others brainwashed ordinary people to sacrifice themselves and none of us can nor have benefitted from it.

I agree. I think a lot of the things in the bible are taken out of context because people don't know the historical facts behind them. They think that it is word for word. Well sometimes it is, but you are reading it in a different time frame. Like when Jesus says, I tell you it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven, he doesn't actually mean the eye of needle. At the time sally ports at the top of towers were called the eye of the needle. In order to get a camel through you had to get it down on all four knees and have people pulling from the front while others are pushing from the back. So he was makeing a reference to something the people would know at the time, but people today are like oh that's an impossibility. See right here a camel can't go through an eye of a needle. Remember, Jesus was speaking to people in his time, not across time, which obviously lends to him not being devine. However, I don't think we should diminish his messages. He's right, being a greedy bastard probably isn't the best way to live.

And to Bahaus, holy crap man, you actually saw this! Wow.

This is an interesting question. Personally, I'm an atheist so I don't think Jesus was divine or that there is a God. I do think, however, that Jesus lived. He might of took the phrase "Son of God" a little bit too far, know what I'm saying?

What do you mean "called" (as in why the use of the past tense)? Jews believe that all humans are the children of G-d. This means that men are sons of G-d and women are sons of G-d.

As for your second question, Jesus is irrelevent to my faith, so I try not to think about him at all.
