When starting my Jeep, the engine will spin, like it is going to start, for about 8 or 9 seconds, before actually starting. It always starts and does not run rough or sputter. Although, if I turn the switch on off on off on off, it will usually start up quicker. Is this a fuel filter, fuel pump, or fuel relay issue? It runs fine, but it's just a pain if I am in a hurry. I can hear the pump running and it has never failed to start, but, I have owned this Jeep for 3 years and have had this problem the entire time. Also, is the filter located in the tank? I can seem to find it in-line anywhere.

The problem with your Jeep is the fuel pump. Working in a Jeep service department I have repaired many Jeeps with this same concern. The fuel filter is part of the pump.

You simply aren't properly starting your vehicle. When you start the jeep don't just turn the key to start, turn the key to on wait for the fuel pump to stop running and then start the jeep. This allows the fuel pump to repressurize the system and pump fuel to the injectors. On the 97 and newer jeeps the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump assembly. So yes the fuel filter is in the fuel tank on your jeep.

When I first bought my 96 jeep grand cherokee it did the same thing until I asked a dealer about it and they told me that I was just simply starting it wrong. So now that I perform the correct steps it hasn't failed to start since then.

I have a 89 Jeep Cherokee and when I have a performance problem, I go to '2CarsPro' to the 'Auto Repair by Topic' section. When I go to my mechanic for repair, I am able to speak on there level well enough to communicate the problem. I can't rceommend 2CarsPro highly enough.

its got to be your fuel system go get a filter and change it your probably plugged up like crazy. the filter is located inline along the frame if you cant find it you probably arent looking hard enough. check everywhere on the jeep it has to have one its not some weird pump with the filter attached deals its somewhere on that frame you just have to look harder. better yet go buy a filter for it and then hold it in your hand while your looking so you see exactly what your looking for haha. but if that dont fix it then you may have to get a new pump which is a lot more labor intensive.

all jeep cherokees break down like 50 million times. Dont try to fix it. In the end you'll end up paying more then it's worth.

If it is not the starter you hear spinning before it starts, then it would be the fuel system, you my have injectors clogged open, a bad fuel pump, something is not keeping fuel in the lines to the head.. Do you get a smell of gasoline after you turn it off? might have a small leak some where..

you can try replacing the fuel filter yourself. cheaper to do it yourself like 15 or 20 bucks. if that's not the problem then you don't loose much money in the process. to find the fuel filter go to discount auto parts or whatever auto place is near you and flip through the owners manual or talk to one of the employees they usually can help you find it. goodluck
