Embarrassment is not what the dog was feeling. He was intimidated/scared.

Dogs, like people, can feel emotions like happiness, fear, anger and sadness. You'll even see it expressed on their little canine faces. They will also feel “complex” emotions like jealousy, pride and guilt.

Dogs don't feel embarassed like people, but they can feel fear just fine, especially when their normal routine is disrupted. Your dog witnessed his pack leaders fighting and like any normal dog, he was frightened. With a pack of dogs, if a subordate dog blunders into the middle of a pack leader fight, he's going to get his butt torn up. Also, it's not uncommon for the loser of the fight to turn on the next dog down the ladder, which would have been your dog. Soo, his behavior is entirely normal and I'd just leave him alone for a little bit and let him relax. When he thinks the coast is clear, he'll come back out and be sociable.

yes. they have the same emotions as humans. a friend of mine dressed her boxer up for Halloween. She bragged on the dog and told her how pretty she was. The dog pranced around so proud. Then when my friend's husband saw the dog and laughed at the dog, the dog wouldn't wear the costume if her husband was home. The poor little doggie held her head down in shame.

Embarassment had nothing to do with your dog's reaction. Most likely, he was scared at the raised voices and yelling between you and your boyfriend, Many dogs will move away as far as they can from any kind of arguing or fighting. Dogs absolutely can sense your emotions.

In this case I think that he wasn't as embarrassed as he was getting smart and deciding to stay out of the line of fire (so to speak) and was didn't go near you because he just wanted to be sure that you both had calmed down and wouldn't take any residual anger out on him, or he could have felt that he was the cause of the argument and didn't want to go to you because he didn't want the angry voices to start up again. What you SHOULD have done is go to him together and in very kind and gentle voices (meaning both of you telling him this instead of one doing all of the talking) telling him that you both love him and that he doesn't have to worry about anything and you two aren't mad at each other anymore and to prove it hug each other in front of him.

dogs can usually tell that you're angry from the tone of you voice.

Of course they can feel emotions. You have to understand that a dog has a pack mentality. You are his alpha and if you're obviously upset and angry it frightens him. Dogs are constantly aware of the moods of the leader and don't like trouble. He might have been afraid that you were angry at him.

of course they can.......
it was probably scared of you guys fighting. Dogs can sense everything, anger, sadness, and love. Next time you cry, see if your dog is looking at you, or pays extra attention to you. It's definitely not that he was embarrassed....he was just scared.

he might not be embarassed, but more sense the disagreeable emotion and decide that it wouldn't be good to get involved. That happens to my dog after I get sad, or my parents get upset or something. If he senses that I'm sad, he'll come lay next to me, but after an arguement, he'll lay down on his pillow and look all depressed. I think that they can feel emotions.

Your dog probably thought that you and your boyfriend were yelling at him. Try petting your dog and talking to it in a soothing voice telling im that your not mad at him and he will probably start being himself again

I hate to say it, but you probably scared him half to death, when you were arguing. Dogs do feel emotions, fear, anxiety, pain, happiness, love, anger,etc... It's quite possible that he related your arguing, to being mad at him. Just talk to him calmly, play with him and give him lot's of love.
