Along with everything else that has been said already it could also be your Gall Bladder. Does it also hurt between your shoulder blades, cause that is another sign of gall bladder problems.

You didn't mention exactly which part of your lower back is hurting.
You could have Sciatica - especially if the pain extends down into your right leg. This is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve. You can treat it with alternating moist heat and ice packs and gentle stretching. A chiropractic adjustment can realign your spine and relieve a pinched nerve.
Without more information, it is difficult to suggest what else could be the cause.

There can be many reason for this, lifting, bending the wrong way, a fall, that doesnt even have to be recent.... I have alot of berve and musle damage in my lower, and mid back as well as beteen my shoulder blades. It would hurt me so bad that I couldn't sleep.My Boss introduce me to this Chiropractor, I have been only twice but I can tell a difference. Just make sure you get a good one!One that comes Highly recommended!

? How much does your back pack weigh?
Which shoulder do you carry it on and do you carry purse too? These will cause back pain

you could have a:-
kidney infection
spinal degeneration
scoliosis
kyphosis
osteoporosis
hip displasia
or
a simple muscle strain
