I guess it would depend on the year Lightning you are looking at. I own at 94 with the 5.8L (351 Windsor). I bought it used and it has always run great however when I had intake problems with it and went to buy a new one I found out that the engine had been discontinued 2 years after it was build and that the part was no longer available unless I could find one in a junk yard. Let me tell you I search the web and still couldn't come up with a decent replacement. Finally I had to resort to going to a metal fabricator and having them weld my aluminum intake so that I could get my truck up and running. As far as gas mileage it does better than most large trucks but definitely doesn't get great mileage. If you decide to get one check into it first to make sure that the engine you are getting has replacement parts available, I learned my lesson.

The girl that said american isn't as good as rice doesn't know his stuff. Ford and G.M. are good or better than the rest. I am a Ford man,and have never had a bad one. I am 62 years old,so I do have some experience. I have owned lots of cars, and I never look beyond a Ford or Lincoln dealer. (I own 2 Towncars.) A new Crown Victoria,(what the cops drive) and a F150 Pick-up with 167,000 miles on it. It will outrun almost anything, except a Lightning or Mustang. Go Ford and Chevy!!!!

Forced induction doesn't hurt as long as you aint spinning it up to 10 pounds boost every stoplight. Driven responsibly, these will outlast a normal F150 as the angine components are made stonger. As for the USA vs Japan subject: Japan built was better from 1970's - early 1990's because of better parts machining (computer controlled robotics makes tighter tolerances) but the United States has matched their technology now (not to mention that is where a lot of the parts come from now). The most american made truck you can buy is toyota, anyway.

Ford has been building the best selling p/u's in the US for over 20 yrs & the reason is reliability & not eye appeal. Small block Fords properly maintained are good for 200-300K miles. I have an Exploder w/200K on it now (4.0 Motor) and gets 22-24 mpg, doesn't use oil 7& is Strong. Bow ties are for sissies.

Lightnings are pretty reliable trucks, I know several people with L's putting mid 400 hp and over 500 tq to the wheels on stock engine internals (with 15 psi boost!) and on the stock transmission and they drive em' every day. Those trucks were built to haul *** and handle abuse.

forget the guy who said american cars aren't reliable...they have come a long way and now they are just as good if not better than japanese cars. i am a chevy guy too, but i also like the lightening. It would make a good daily driver, as long as you didn't race all the time...you know? like if you drove it easy most of the time it wouldn't give you that many problems.

Anything supercharged is going to be HIGH maintenance. Much like a hot chick. The work will be needed often, but it is a necessary evil.
