it is called world war because it is a conflict fought in different parts of the world. Example WW2 was fought in Poland, Russia France well basicaly almost all of eurupe the swiss claimed nutriality but was effected just the same. Japann declared war on China the U.S. and Russia Great Britian and all of the South Pacific it was a world conflict where over 35 million people were killed not counting people that were never seen again America alone lost well over 200000 men and women. WW1 was typical of the first srarting in Croatia when Prince Ferdanan was assisanated by anarcast. Countrys lined up behind there countries that they had pleged there support if ever a problem occurd. Korea was a Police action but it killed many American and British troops, Viet Nam was a conflict to stop the advance of communisiam and as you know over 55 thousand Americans were killed there to. And now Our fine Mr Bush has decided because of his own agendas that we need to attack Iraq. He is asking for help but the rest of the world sees just how stupid he is and what a bad cause this really is. Britian and America is taking the brunt of this move and more young Americans are being killed daily and i would bet Bush does not loose a bit of sleep over it.

At any given time in history, there are numerous wars and conflicts going on. Currently there are 40+/- conflicts in the world. The only time the WORLD WAR status is attibuted to a war is when the superpowers square off on opposite sides in open declarations of war.
We are far from that scenario, altho i agree the spark is there to ignite a larger conflagaration. But for now, just think regional conflicts, proxy wars, brinksmanship, sabre rattling and disagreements between rump states.
When the US, Russia and/or China square, then come back and we'll talk WW III. The history books haven't declared the Cold War as WWIII or the current war on terror as WWIV as some of the Answerers claim above. You'll know when WWIII hits, that burst of EMP will be your first warning....
As Einstein is often quoted as saying, WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones....for WWIII will have knocked us back into the stone ages.

Both World Wars had over 65% of the worlds countries involved fighting somewhere..... and in both cases there were battles raging across nearly every ocean and most of the landmasses.
The next world war will be easy to spot...... just look for the mushroom clouds....
...and if anyone says America will start it?
I'll bet you a brand new anti-radiation suit that it will be some Arabic Muslim fanatic with a suitcase nuke somewhere in Europe or the Americas that tries first.

There's no specific criteria, many would say we're in World War III right now, and I agree with that.
