When the door is open, I pause so then she can go first. Why does she just wait? Does she want me to go first, because I normally let her go first.

It depends where is the door leading. You go first through some doors--elevator, for example, please check with an etiquette book. Good luck.

To the many people who answered this question, if the door is already open, then how would he be able to open it for her? She's probably just not sure whether to go first, so she's pausing for you to go first, just like you are. Kind of like in the hallway when two people end up facing right in front of each other. They wait for the other person to shift to the right or left first so they won't both shift to the left or something. I don't think you should really think about it too much.

What you do is the right thing. The man should also open the door for a woman, unless they enter a restaurant, in which case he should go first. Is this the instance when she hesitates to enter? If so, there's your answer. If not, maybe she's just too independent and she doesn't want to be treated "like a helpless woman". But why don't you ask her if she thinks it's improper for you to hold the door open for her. The way she might thing it would be improper to hold her overcoat for her to put on.

She's waiting for you to be a gentleman and open the door for her. She's testing you to see if you'll open the door, the car door, stand up when she leaves the table and when she returns and pull out her chair when she sits. You passed. I don't really believe that a guy should do everything for you cuz I'm independent, not saying she is, But if you love her and she's worth it, just do it for her sake, even if you hate it. Love is a freaky thing, but it's nice. Take care of her and yourself. Good luck.

It's possible she doesn't realize you're holding the door open for her or she's a bit oblivious to the fact that you're holding it open for her and not yourself. She also might not want to seem high-maintenance by expecting you to hold a door open. A way to quickly get around this without much trouble is two simple words just say "after you" and she'll quickly realize that you're being a gentleman and probably appreciate how sweet that is.

Sometimes if my honey opens the door before me, I pause to make sure he was acually opening it for me in the first place and usually he'll put his arm around me or on the small of my back and stride in right behind me.

lol. Next time just open the door wide enough and walk in first. Most likely, she'll follow behind! =)
