it's a beautiful city.....the North Sea ...warehouse district...etc.....I loved it....nice nightlife...wealthy port city...

Do you know that Cologne has survived from British bombing, just because that someone from British Army, who was in charge for bombing of German cities was a Catholic, and he has refused to bomb Cologne , because there was /and still is one of the best catholic Churches - Dom of Cologne.

Hamburg was an industrial center so the British said!

Though the Germans blame the English, especially bombing in urban areas, the 8th Air Force Bomber Command conducted the daylight raids and the British at night.

No major German city was not bombed and Hamburg was hit some 90 more times before the end of the war!

Why is a good question, though it was a major Seaport!

Germany is a beautiful country with some very nice people!

Because it was an easy target. Because the British wanted to make an example of it to get even for bombing London. And because they could. The Luftwaffe was crippled by that point in the war so its defense was nonexistent and the casualties incurred to the RAF air crews would be negligible.

Hamburg was a base for German U-boats that were sinking many tons of food and war materials the British needed as well as killing their crews.

Also, it was an industrial base where German weapons were being built.

Mad bomber Harris thought at the time it would help cripple Germany's Industrial might and bring a quicker end to the war.

Allied bombers ( American & British) dropped bombs on Germany.
Thousands of civilians were killed. It was thought that this would break the morale of the German people.Millions of families in Germany were left homeless.
