A lot of this depends upon the injury of the third person. Lets assume that it is disabling but not immediately life threating and that moving the person poses no additional risk such as a sever head injury.

1) A basic stretcher made of two poles and some clothing or lashing will get the victim over most of the terain. If it is more then a days journey the poles will also serve to provide framework for shelter.

2) If the ground is flat and unencumbered the poles can be raised on one end to make a travis (sp) so that one person can tow the victim while the other rescuer takes a walking break.

3) Travel should be based on the conditions. For example if you are in the desert, traveling during the day will cost you more body fluid then doing it at night.

4) Vertical ascents will be tough typically they will require some kind of rope and one hauls while one monitors, tends, or secures safety lines.

5) Most important is the safety and health of the rescuers. If they are hurt EVERYONE is doomed (sorry Mr. Victim.. but you come second). So, the victim gets the minimum resources (water, food, etc..) to sustain him .

6) If both rescuers become exhausted or either is unable to proceed, then the remaing strong one should proceed alone and clearly mark his path. Note that separation of the group is not the best choice but sometimes the only one.

7) Of course you had your GPS and Cell phone with you ... right?

You have to be an artist to perform the feat of rescuing the actor. And like any good performance, it takes some rehearsal.
