My bf and I have only had our pomeranian pup 6 days but we love him and he is normally well-behaved. He is cage trained. His cage is in the bedroom (used at night) and his pen is in the living room (used in the day time). I am litterbox training him in the pen. He is doing incredibly well with it. The problem is: whenever I am more than 10 ft away --even within his sight-- he whines, yelps, and howls (in a tiny puppy way --LOUD, sounds like screaming baby!). After walking him, feeding him, playing with him, I would like to be able to sweep my dining area and clean the table without having the neighbors think I'm killing him. How can I silence him? Or is it even age-appropriate to expect him to play with his toys while I am 10 ft away? HELP!!!

He will quiet down after time... He needs to realize that you're not abandoning him, and you just have things you need to do.

Puppies adore company. Dogs are pack animals.

As far as the puppy is concerned, you're it's mommy! It doesn't want you walking away and leaving it somewhere!

Just give it time, you have to ignore the whelps and cries, and eventually it will learn that crying and whelping will not make you come back, and that you have things you need to take care of. If you keep coming back to it, it knows that by crying and whelping it will get the attention that it wants, which can be bad when the dog gets older.

Don't worry, my puppy used to do the same thing! It will stop, I promise. Give it a week or two, and you'll be fine!

You have to remember, that this puppy is only 8 weeks old, he's been taken away from his mother, and his siblings, he's in a brand new environment, with new people, and he's scared and very confused. It's normal puppy behavior, and will pass in time. What I found has helped me is, put a clock in the area he sleeps in, the ticking sound reminds them of their mom's heartbeat, put a soft stuffed animal in there too, it will make it feel like it's still with it's mom, a soft blanket for security, and some toys, {Stuffed Toys and Chew Toys because he's teething}. Give him lot's of love and attention and play with him as much as you can. The whining is from fear of being left alone and not being able to see you. He'll be fine once he adjusts to everything and everyone. Good Luck! Hope this helps a little!

Do NOT use a spray bottle on your puppy. He'll learn to calm down and be quiet with time. You have to avoid making eye contact with him while he's crying. Don't talk to him and don't let him know that he's bothering you. Just act as if everything is fine, and eventually he'll realize that his whining and crying aren't working and that he just has to wait his turn. Pay attention to him when he's quiet and he'll learn that that's the behavior that gets rewarded. His crying is normal, and all puppies do it at first. It just takes time and patience. Good luck!

Put a sheet or thin tablecloth over the pen so he can't see you. Put some background music on and start cleaning. Ignore him. He will likely not bark very long since he can't see you.
Try giving him something special like a stuffed Kong when you put him in to divert his attention after some possible initial yelping.

Stuffed toy near his same size. Sometimes it works for a playmate.

Try a spray bottle, and yell "quiet" every time he does this.
