hello, when i play fetch with my dog (max) he will go get the object but wont give it back to throw it again. All he wants me to do is try to catch him while he runs around with it in his mouth . So to my question, is this just silly play for him or is he trying to be the dominant one???

Just silly puppy play.

If he was trying to be dominant, he would chase you.

I don't know. All my dogs use to do that, but they did it because they thought that's the way the game was suppose to be played. We didn't train them to well. Maybe he's just playing around, but maybe it's a dominance thing. Was he trained well? Does he try to exert his dominance in other ways?

boxers are very smart, but also very playful and goofy dogs...i doubt hes trying to be dominant, he just wants to play...i have a 1 year old female, and one time she'll know exactly what to do and the next, when shes playful she will forget all of her training and act like a total moron

My boston terrier does the same thing. He just loves the game of try and catch me. If you want him to just bring it back to you don't chase him. By chasing him you are doing what he wants instead of him doing what you want.

Boxer's just don't have natural fetching skills like Retrievers do. He's just playing. I have a husky and that's her absolute favorite game!

He is being dominate over you. You need to teach him to drop the toy or let you take it from him. That will probably be difficult if he is used to this behavior already.
