I recently had sinusitis and was on Ceftin for 10 days. The Ceftin cleared up the sinus infection, but over the last couple days of taking Ceftin my tonsils were starting to get covered in white spots. A few days later they were covered in even more white stuff, so I went to my doctor who took a look at my throat and my very swollen lymph nodes on the right side (Very large and visibly swollen, although no longer very painful.) and tested me for Mono, which came back negative. He then did a throat culture test (Still awaiting results.) and said he thought it was strep throat. He started me on a 10-day course of Augmentin 875mg, twice a day.

I started treatment yesterday and today I've noticed that my throat isn't doing any better. It's more sore than it was yesterday, AND there's even more white gunk on the right side.

I've read strep usually improves a day or two after starting treatment.

Is it possible for the infection to still worsen for a day or two after starting treatment?

On a side note, I'm pretty sure it's not Oral Thrush...

Thrush usually starts in the cheeks/on your tongue, and moves back towards the tonsils. I've also been eating a decent amount of yogurt to help maintain a good balance within my body to help prevent that. I am fairly susceptible to tonsil problems quite often anyway...

Also, oral thrush wouldn't cause swollen lymph nodes, if I'm not mistaken... Either way, I've had the throat culture test done and will get the results on Monday... That will determine if it is indeed Strep, Tonsillitis, or Thrush. Guess we'll find out, eh?

On a side note, my friend's sister had strep throat the other day when we all hang out. I ended up having to sit next to her at the diner we went to, so it's a possibility if she coughed/sneezed anywhere, the droplets could've gotten in my food and I could've caught strep there.

We shall discover the answer to what this is, soon!

I've had problems in the past with my tonsils getting infected. It takes 48 hours for the antibiotics to even start working. So yes it can get worse while you are taking them. You should have improvement in 72 hours if you don't call your doctor again. In the mean time gargle with warm salt water, that will help. Take care of yourself, and get better quick..

Are you sure you don't have oral thrush as a result of using ceftin for 10 days? A white coating is a sign of this. Antibiotics will make it worse. You could need an antifungal instead.

On the other hand it is common with antibiotics for symptoms to worsen in the first day. By day 4 you should be improving, if not, it's the wrong antibiotic.

But i'd go back to your doc and ask him if he thinks it might be thrush or something similar.

I always feel worse as the treatment start to work. I have always suspected that things get worse before better. I know that you are supposed to be no longer contagous after 48 hours on an antibiotic. Definitley follow-up if not better in a couple of days.

Yes this is very possible....it take a while for the antibiotics to kill all of the infection.....that's why you stay on them for many many days...until they're finished. You should be feeling better usually about the night of the second day, or the third day.

Prolonged usage of antibiotics could result in mild skin reactions to severe anaphylaxis. Sometimes it might be highly detrimental to central nervous system. This is the case where the patient immune system is weak or bad. Neurobion forte is a good medicine which actually helps in the functioning of your nervous system. One more thing - Most important - Nobody can prescribe a medicine for deceased. Deceased means dead. the correct spelling is disease.

i would be very suprised if you started to feel better the day you start treatment - infact it usually takes 48hrs for meds to startr to work - and that's if the doctor was right and it is a strep germ - if it's another germ you might not respond to that antibiotic...you're not crazy - lol - i hope you're feeling better soon...

It is possible for it to get worse while the augmentin is getting in to your system. It could have to do with the ceftin you were on for the sinusitis. It it doesn't get any better in a day or so, call your doctor back again.

Sounds like "thrush". Ask your doctor. Not all antibiotics work for all people for all infections. If one isn't working, go for the next. This is not something you need to suffer from. Good luck.

I would go back to your doctor and ask for another mono test. Augmentin (which is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid) will make mono symptoms worse, if it is given in a case of mistaken diagnosis. Given what you have said, I would think that you still have mono. It is possible to be tested for mono and have it come back negative when you are positive.
