it depends on the dogs itself and NOT the breed. Some dogs can have their first cycle as early as 5 months old or as late as 11 months. I've heard of a dog that had her first cycle at 18 weeks. Yep... thats early. It all depends on the individual dog. If it has been over 12 months though, i would suggest getting her tested for a metabolic disease that can be found in some female dogs. It is RARE but it does exist.

Normally, you can start watching for the first heat at about 6 months or so. That is not an exact age as it varies with size, breed and other factors. Just like with human females.
Most female dogs are spayed at about 6 months and before they go into heat, or should be!
First signs of being in heat are overly affectionate, constantly wanting your attention and rubbing on you or their toys. The privates will begin to swell. By the second week they will start to bleed. The heat is normally about 3 weeks in all, do not bleed that whole time.
If your dog is at least 5 months old please call and schedule her spay appointment.

Depens on the individual dog and the breed. Well, it DOES depend on the breed. Some breeds are SLOWER to mature and generally go into season later. I have Newfies and sometimes they do NOT come in until 18-20 months. Smaller dogs tend to come in sooner, giant dogs later. The slower to mature breeds the latest.

At the vet clinic I work at we recommend spaying at 5-6 months of age. Any time thereafter they can go into heat. It depends on the breed & the size of the dog.

First heat is at ~6-8 mths old, but usually dont see it- vulva doesnt get swollen as much as it does at the 2nd cycle, and the discharge is minimal(dog usuallu licks it off before you evenn see it)
