My grandma says for the smell of garlic or onions, wash your hands with salt (lots of it) and then rub your hands on a stainless steel knife. I've also seen stainless steel odor removing bars sold at kitchen supply stores so it's the same idea as the knife.

Covering the scent won't help. Lemons and perfumes will only cover the smell, not remove it. You'll just eventually end up smelling like garlic and whatever scent you used to try and hide it, not a good combination.

Find a nice strong exfoliating soap with a grainy texture (Lava hand soap works great!) wash your hands several times, making sure to dry thoroughly each time. The smell should come off with 3-4 washings.

Use lemon juice or better yet go to Williams Sonoma or a kitchen store and buy a metal bar specifically made for getting out that smell. The metal somehow reacts with the smell. Ask at the store.

Stainless steel is GREAT for taking smells of your hands. I keep a little soap size stainless steel do-dad I got at William and Sanoma right next to my kitchen sink.

Rub stainless steel under cold water. Most decent silverware will work.
