At this point, it has a lot to do with lack of communication (as institutions and individuals.) The "tradition" of blaming each other of leaving the truth of Christ has gone beyond today's facts. Both Protestantism and Catholicism had changed since Luther decided that The Church was not the Institution of God on Earth anymore.
Nowadays it's not about who has the big and unquestionable TRUTH (which in my opinion nobody does since: 1) There can't be perfect human knowledge, 2) there is no denomination that can sustain its position completely unchanged for more than 50 years and 3)Each christian - even if they like it or not- has his/her own personal vision about who God is and what He wants from us) but about what we can do together as Christ followers to help the Redeemer's mission of salvation.

Hello... Jesus is not the same as Buddha. Jesus taught many things that sound a LOT like Buddhism, but his teachings focused around the idea of a "creator god" which Buddhism doesn't subscribe to. Just for your clarification.

Because the schisms that led to Protestantism were political in nature than theological. This led to vilifying the enemy on BOTH sides which cemented the division in Christianity.
Today the problem is generational unadulterated bigotry.

Christianity does not come from the Catholic church! Christianity comes from Christ (God) and His divine word!
Also, the church comes from Christ and His word.
Catholics have it backwards. They say the word comes from the church.
If any church does not come from the word of God in doctrine, organization, name and methods of worship, then it is not under the authority (instruction) of Christ, and therefore, it is not Christ's church.
Christ has "all authority". (Matt 28:18-20) If we follow the doctrines of men, then we are giving part of this authority to someone else.

Most of Western Christianity is PROTESTANT, which PROTESTED against the Catholic Church because of its pagan doctrines and rejection of Scripture. However, today, due to the ecumenical movement, "Protestants" are having more and more in common with the Catholic Church, and they aren't really protesting anything anymore.
