Yes, I personally use several free software packages to protect my computer. I find that they are just as effective (if not often better) than the commercial packages, but they are often more confusing to use or configure compared to their commercial counterparts.

For anti-virus, you can use Avast:

For a firewall, I recommend Zonealarm:

For anti-spyware, there are several choices that are excellent, but I personally use Spybot S&D:

AVG has a free program that works well. Also, a free spyware program is a good idea such as Lavasoft.
