I always DO look when they draw blood, as it makes it much less disturbing. It probably hurts just as much, but my mind is occupied. As for getting injections, much of it depends on the skill of the health care pro., and what is being injected (tetanus shots almost always hurt). You could ask for a topical anesthetic, but they may or may not agree to do it (not sure why!).

I hate needles!

The best thing to do is not to look and to distract yourself. The last time I had to get a needle my doctor pushed my head the other way and started a conversation with me about my upcoming trip to Florida. I was so into telling him what I was planning to do on the trip that I barely felt the needle.

take a deep breath in as the needle is being inserted.

this gets your mind focused on breathing and helps your muscle to relax rather than tensing up.

Not look when the doctor is doing it and think of happy things or something funny. Just don't laugh, because if you move, that might end badly.

Don't watch the doctor and think about either places you want to go to see or your favorite place.

actually, breathe in and out, and its the breathing out part that relaxes, as it stimulates your vagal tone.
