depends, if you travel a lot, get a cat, cause you can leave them inside w/ food, water and a litter box and go on your trip. With a dog, you have to take them or board them. Also, you never have to bathe a cat (except when you first get it).
I love them both, but my son has asthma, so I had to get rid of my precious kitty. I have a maltese dog which is supposed to be allergy free.

I wouldn't be able to decide. Being an animal lover I have 2 dogs and 7 cats plus a stray cat that has his apartment in my garage. I live in the country and have the space and time for all these animals, but traveling is not an option. My advice to you would be to consider your live style. If your gone a lot get a cat or two because they can be left for longer periods of time than a dog. Cats get lonely and like to go in pairs. Dog are much more dependent on you. I do find that all my dogs and cats love to have a lot of T.L.C. I wouldn't live without them.

I am a total dog person and really do not have any interest in owning a cat. Cats even indoor cats carry diseases (on their claws). Not to mention they really could careless about you. Dogs worship the ground you walk on and you actually interact with them. Not only do dogs offer unconditional love but they give protection and dedication. You can walk and train a dog, you can take the dog places and have a true friend for life. Where as a cat is very independent, not very trainable, or an animal you can interact with.We had barns cats but their sole purpose was to catch mice, and that they were good for.

I've had both. They both make great pets. I think it depends on what you want out of your pet. Then it also depends on the bread of the animal as well. Growing up I always had dogs. I loved teaching them tricks, having them follow me around, sleeping with them. I hated taking them out and having to walk them daily. I always heard that cats were unfriendly and stand offish and etc etc. So I never wanted a cat. A couple years ago I moved in with a guy with a couple cats and I took in a stray cat. I was totally wrong about (all) cats. My roomates cats and my cat are extremely friendly. They sleep with me, follow me around, do tricks and etc. They are just like my dogs growing up. The good thing is that I don't have to walk them, take them out three times a day or feel like I have to go home to deal with them like I did when I had a dog. So again....it partly depends on what you want and the particular personality and breed of the animal. Each animal is different.

I have both and i agree it's a big responsibility. Cats however are less of a responsibility(most times.) To train them you just stick their paw in the litter once and they use it forever. Dogs you must train to go outside or use paper. This takes a lot of time and patience. Dogs are friendlier and more affectionate, but can at times be too loving or affectionate. My cat well she just stays out of the way and wants me to pet her every once in a while. She sleeps with me, but other than that. She pretty much cares for herself. Dogs are people animals. Cats are usually loners and less responsibility. But if you get a long haired cat, you will have to bath it and brush it to make sure it does not get knots in it's hair. My vet says a long haired cat needs a bath at least once a month. I have to take mine to the vet for this. They can restrain her, i can not (she weighs 15 pounds). hope this helps.

My roommate has a cat, I hate that thing! It's the dumbest thing i have ever seen. All it does is stink up the litter box, eat, bug the hell out of me at in the middle of the night. This morning, i was on the phone and checking email on laptop on my bed. And the cat who knows better than to jump on my bed jumped up and rubbed on my brand new laptop. I wanted to kill it! I hate cats! They are not all that smart.
That thing is the fattest excuse for a animal. I hope it gets lost. It jumps up on the counter, and you have to tell it not to do something 100 times a day. I think dogs really know what your saying.
If another cat lives with me again, i will probably get a dog that hates cats, just to send a damn message to the cat that randomly craps on my bathroom carpet, even with a clean litterbox. Cats also shed like crazy. More than dogs.
If it's food bowl is empty the same day you filled it up. You better make no plans. That cat will literally walk under your feet and cry all day just to get a refill. And when i finally give in to let that fat thing eat again, it just sits there and stares at it. I know for one that it's too fat and lazy to even think about catching mice. Good thing i don't have any. Anyways, if you have to take your mom or dad to the hospital, you better hope that thing has food, or you'll never make it there in time.

I would say dog, but if you're already drawn to having a cat, then for your satisfaction, get a cat!

well, you should take into account that dogs generally require more attention, as they tend to be a little more pack oriented and many breeds like to have a purpose. cats are usually more independant and dont need you to be around them all day, but they dont follow commands as well as a dog does.
what kind of place do you live in, and what kind of space do you have? how much time can you give your pet? you need to figure it out on your own.
that said, i'm a dog man myself. my girlfriend has 2 cats that are great, but i like an animal that i can horse around with and that will learn to do things with me. you can tell dogs are proud of themselves when you teach them things, and they like to just go for a walk, or take a ride in the car.
but, thats just me.

Both one for loyalty and one to inspire your individuality. I had a cat and dog that were best friends once. They played hide and seek like on otis and milo but one got sick and died so the other did too. It's very depressing but it shows how great their bond was.

DO YOU HAVE THE TIME AND SPACE FOR A DOG. THEY NEED TO GO OUTSIDE. DO YOU HAVE A FENCED IN YARD, IT MAKES IT SO MUCH EASIER. CATS, STAY IN THE HOUSE, CAN TAKE CARE OF ANY MOUSE PROBLEMS, YOU JUST NEED TO CHANGE THE LITTER. IT'S REALLY UP TO YOU. THEY BOTH NEED AT LEAST A HALF HOUR OF ATTENTION FROM YOU EVERY DAY.
