No difference. If you look up what they do in the temple, you will see the cult practice.

Your mom is a grown up and I'm sure she couldn't be brainwashed, that's ridiculous. All's that happens when someone joins the LDS church is that they are given missionary lessons about what the church believes, and then they are asked if they want to be baptized. If you look up the definiton of a cult you will find that all religions technically fit into the category. But when I think of a cult I think of a group of people who break off from society and don't let the members have any contact with the outside world. Mormons are the 4th largest religon in the US and are everywhere. They preach about following Jesus Christ example of loving one another, and doing good works. They are not hiding out anywhere, or doing anything crazy, so I would say that the LDS church is not a cult.

That word cult is thrown around too much. anytime a particular group of people do not go with the mainstream they are called a cult.
But as far as brainwashing all Christians do this. Brainwashing is repeating something until it is believed without being questioned.

There is no difference - the Mormon religion IS a cult because they preach a false doctrine: the book of Mormon. They claim it's 'another testament of Jesus Christ, when in all truth, it's garbage - the Mormons themselves wrote it - not God. Any religion that is outside of true Christianity (abiding and adhering to God's word only - no man-made doctrine and ritualistic nonsense) is a cult.
To Choppy108: Roman Catholics are the ones that believe in the actual drinking of Christ's blood and eating his flesh - NOT Christians. The RCs misuse the term 'Christian'. In all reality, they are NOT even CLOSE to the real meaning of Christianity. They merely put themselves in that classification, but are not. Sooooooo many people are misled into believing that RCs and Christians are the same - they are NOT. The RC church calls it 'transubstantiation', the 'magical transformation of the wafer into the actual flesh of Christ', which is nothing short of cannibalism! That is NOT - I repeat; NOT a part of the Christian religion! The RCs are in a class by themselves - a totally different religion altogether - they're NOT Christians! I'm a born again Christian and I DO NOT believe in drinking blood and eating flesh. The RC's communion is based on cannibalism. I go to a bible-preaching church that believes in remembering the Lord's supper with broken pieces of ordinary bread and grape juice - NOT blood and NOT flesh - get the picture??

I think that cults start getting called sects, then religions when they start getting bigger, look at Scientology, formed by a science fiction writer, and all the rage in Hollywood. The only difference is how many folks are in each one.

The difference is the size. If a certain belief is held by only a few, then it is called a cult. If it is held by the masses, it is called religious.
There is no objective measurement as to what is a cult and what is a religious, it is subjective.

Why don't you study about the LDS religion yourself and have informed conversations with her about her new beliefs.
You can just read about it on their web site, the link is in the source list. That way their is no way you could also be "brain washed".
Studying from their own web site will let you talk with her about the principals and beliefs a lot better then with what info you may find on some of the other sites out there.

All religions are essentially cults. The only real difference is how mainstream they are.
The really dangerous ones not only try to convert you, but they cut you off from your friends and family too. That is what leads to brainwashing and total control.

News flash - there is NO difference between religions and cults. I'll repeat that for those here who are unable to take that in after reading it only one time - there is NO difference.
They both propogate dangerous myths, and manipulate and control any who fall into the trap.

I reccommend you move away from home if you haven't already. The mormons might try to force you to become one and once that happens they will try to get you to marry some 70 year old guy with like 20 wives all under 16. Yes, it's a sick cult...you see their stories on the news all the time!

I really don’t see a difference between “cults” and any religion for that matter, except that some people want to try to set themselves apart from and above others, who they don’t want to be associated with.
