Depends upon the circumstances. Normally it's just treated as any accident.

I was t-boned by a cruiser that ran a red light chasing someone -- no lights or siren. The city (Boston) was very accommodating in settling my claim and the cop couldn't stop apologizing.

Cops are just people. After you make sure that nobody is injured, become friends. Offer them a swig from the bottle that you stashed under the seat or roll up a doob from the bag in the glove compartment.

Same amount of trouble. Just don't expect a fair break. If the accident wasn't your fault the police report will depict it as if it were, and the cops will all change their stories.
