This is one of the old church debates. My understanding is that the act of masturbation in itself is NOT a sin, but that veiwing porn or adult material to do it IS a sin because one is committing adultery in their mind by thinking about having sex with someone and God clearly states this is a sin. But what if you are masturbating to prevent yourself from having actual sex? Obviously, this is a question for Christians. Keep it real people. Keep it real. Thanks.

= Masturbation =

Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).

The Catholic Church recognizes the power of sex when it teaches, "Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul."

Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person. A chaste person's body and spirit lives in unity and opposes any behavior that would impair that unity.

Masturbation is contrary to the human dignity of the person and anyone about whom the person has lustful thoughts, and the dignity of human sexuality.

= Pornography =

Catholics believe that pornography offends against chastity because it perverts the intimate giving of spouses to each other.

It does grave injury to the human dignity of all participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others.

Check out Romans 14:1-23

I am assuming that you are a Christian, if you're not this probably won't really mean anything to you.

If you believe in your heart that something is wrong and you do it any way, that is where the sin comes in. In the reference I pointed you to food is used as the example, however you could replace food with almost anything and the context will remain the same.

Regarding masturbation, ask yourself where your mind goes during the act... I'm willing to bet it isn't your algebra homework.

Jesus says that if we look at a woman with a lustfully we have already committed adultery with her in our heart... (Matthew 5:27-28) Does it not stand to reason that the same thing applies to thinking about a woman (or man) lustfully.

Bottom line... Neither yes or no on the masturbation thing... But what goes on in our heart and mind... now that's a whole different matter.

okay you have many things going here..
Porn is a sin for it is having sex with someone other than your spouse. yes even viewing others having sex on the screen is such...even in the reading medium it is..you are thinking these thoughts so therefore they are not good.
Masturbation in the old days was wrong for it was up to the man to keep the seeds of his going to fill the earth in honor of God. Now it is smart so that we do not populate the earth with so many children. and to have relations with those who are not our spouse. I think that surely you can relieve yourself from the pressures of wanting sex without pictures etc.
Okay so what it boils down to is the motive behind the action it is up to you and God to decide

No it is NOT a sin. The Bible was written in the time when the heads of the tribes needed labor to tend the flocks and do the work. When puberty came to children, they were encouraged and actually forced to marry and reproduce. That of which you speak, delayed the production of children. All "seed" was required to grow and flourish. If you get my meaning. Children were a "Crop" to be harvested in those day.

I think you're right, it's not the act is looked at as a sin. It's about not thinking about it all the time, or getting addicted to it.
