A lot of very valid answers above me. I have 2 Miniature Dachshunds, my advise would be to so a lot of research and find a reputable breeder. That is very important and often overlooked. Second Dachshunds are VERY stubborn and a little spiteful at times. The stubbornness is especially prominent in house training. It's not that they want to do anything wrong they just truly believe that the rules don't always apply! You must be consistent and firm and provide a lot of direction especially in the early years of their life. And never quit!
They are loyal to the end, love to play and are extremely cuddly! They are full of affection and like to have a "job" to keep them busy. Remember they are from the hound family so they need to feel like they have a purpose!

Dachshunds are playful, fun dogs, known for their propensity to chase small animals, birds and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity. Many dachshunds are strong-headed or stubborn, making them a challenge to train. Often, dachshunds are a breed extremely loyal to their owners, a characteristic that is less pronounced in the wire-haired variety.
According to the American Kennel Club’s breed standards, the dachshund is clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness, persevering in above and below ground work, with all the senses well-developed. Any display of shyness is a serious fault. Their temperament and body language give the impression that they do not know or care about their relatively small and comical stature. Indulged dachshunds may become snappy.

They do tend to bark a lot. They are NOT that great with kids, and it is also somewhat dangerous to the dog. Because of their length, the way that kids pick them up can damage the dachshund's back. If they get dropped, their legs can't take the abuse. They can be great dogs, but it depends on the situation.

We have a female mini dach, they are the best dogs..if trained right...they are very stubborn and can be hard to house break..(the trick is they need a yard they can be out in whenever they want, and need to be out there frequently,) they are very very smart, and very very loving.... however...they can be spiteful,(in a funny way) and they never smell. they like to burrow, no matter the time of year ours is always under some kind of cover, and they in my opinion are the best dog for a child, our was put in the doll cradle, high chair, and stroller, she has been dressed up, and forced into tea parties...and yet has never snapped, nor bitten.

Yes they are. My Dachshund loves to lay on my lap and lick my face. Her mother and sisters are just like her.

......... Dachshunds are ideal dogs for small children, as they are already stretched and pulled to such a length that the child cannot do much harm one way or the other. ~
