Music is a very emotional thing if you can make your audience cry at a beautiful song then you've done a good job, its not that people who are musical are prone to depression thats very far from the case a lot of musicians put pain or sadness into their songs because a lot of people out there can connect with it and thats what music is about people like the kind of music they can connect with if they're in a great mood they want fun songs to listen to or it they're in a depressed state its the same situation. The population of people with depression is HUGE across the world some people talk a lot of people don't we all have our little problems but musicians take the spot light because they put their depression to a creative use and people notice theres a problem.
A lot of famous artists had mental problems it does not mean they more prone to mental problems because they were artists it just means they had a problem and they also liked art and people like to talk about that kind of things quirks about people. There are a lot of artists out there and I mean A LOT just when some of them have problems it really gets people talking and it makes it seem as though mental illness makes artists better its far from the truth.
When people talk they talk and they focus on the more interesting things and a lot of people find sad things something that gets people listening there are tons of musicians out there some have problems some don't just those who do tend to get caught up in gossip and people begin to think musicians are more emotional than others. Simply its not true being a musician can't make you more prone to getting depressed

I believe it has to do with personality type. Of the five temperaments, musical ability is associated with the "melancholy" temperament. These people tend to be more moody, more introspective, etc., which allows them to emote more easily. (And isn't music simply melodic emotions?) That's not to say that all melancholy people are depressed, but, like you said, they can be more prone to it.

Because they are artists. Artistic people have been known to be prone to depression. Maybe because they have sensitive natures?

That's why they call it the Blues man. However that's not true. The most depressed group is the Professionals. More stress etc.

I'm not. Well, I'm more shy, but I've only been like that for like two years. I've played violin for four years.
