Planning a trip to Hawaii for the 1st time. Need suggestions?

I'm planning a trip to Hawaii (Honolulu (Oahu)) from Los Angeles with my girlfriend in early Feb for 4-5 days. What are some places are MUST-GO's? I am planning to rent a car but I heard it is not neccesary due to the fact it's difficult to find parking? As far as the weather, will it be rainny in early Feb?

To some extent, this depends on your interests.

I am going to assume that at least part of the reason you are coming to Hawaii is to enjoy the beaches. While the beaches in Waikiki are quite nice (and the number of locals who still like to go to these beaches prove it), you will probably want to see some of the other beaches. I recomend getting out of Waikik- and Honolulu - all together.

Lanikai Beach is frequently mentioned as the top swimming beach in Hawaii, and its really hard to argue with this. It is probably closest to what you imagine a Hawaiian beach looks like.

Hanauma Bay is lovely, but it is wicked overcrowded. If you are going to visit it, take the bus. Parking is a nightmare. That said, you're basically swimming in an extinct volcano with some of the most beautiful fish in the Pacific. Not a bad way to spend the day!

Many people swear by Waimanalo beach park also. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but I remember it being gorgeous.

Really, any of the north shore beaches are going to be pleasant for you. The north shore features stronger surf, which can also be good fun.

I would encourage you to try and catch the view from Tantalus, also. Some of the best photo ops on the island. You get a spectacular view of Honolulu, especially Diamondhead.

You can also get a spectacular view from the Pali Lookout - though this time of Kaneohe Bay and Chinaman's Hat. You can get some truly amazing photos from this area. My screensaver photo was taken by my neighbor from the Pali Lookout, so you know I love it.

If you like hiking, there are some fantastic trails. Why not explore Paradise Park? It is sort of off the beaten path in Manoa and you'll be able to find some waterfalls among some beautiful plant life.

There are other "touristy" things that you might want to do. For example, my parents loved their visit to the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. It is a sobering experience, but (when I went in the early 90's) was very classy.

I don't recomend Germaine's Luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center, but that is strictly out of personal predjudice. I found them both to be a little "Disney-fied" and felt like my intelligence was being insulted. And I'm not a very intelligent guy, so take that for what its worth.

It is worth it to rent a car, even if it's just for one day. It may be very expensive to keep your rental car parked at your hotel. I stayed in a hotel on Wakiki and it costes $18 to park a car there for an hour!

But there is a lot to see that could be done with a tour. (Pearl Harbour, Hanahama Bay) Oahu is a small island so one day with a car would be enough. The North Shore is a good place to drive to, the waves are huge! It may be hard to park there might be walking involved to get to the beach. Its is so nice there so why not eh.

Waikiki Beach is beautiful and a must see. As for shopping, International Market place. It has cheap shops with a wide range of things to buy. There are resturaunts there as well. Diamond Head is a really neat mountain, its cool to see, you will see it from a distance if you go to waikiki beach.

As for weather - i am unsure. I went to Oahu last January and it rained once or twice, I imagine it wont be to different in Febuary.
