Get the best teacher you can afford and practice, practice, practice!
Check all your local music schools and colleges for references to a trainer or teacher. Be sure to have him teach you how to practice and use your instrument. I wanted to be a singer, but did not have the instruction I needed and ended up doing something else.
If you love beautiful singing I recommend you listen to the Irish tenors for some incredible examples of bella voci (beautiful voices).
Good luck. May you achieve all you hope for!

First I would sugggest looking for a vocal coach at a local college. Usually there are graduate students there that would like the opportunity to coach young singers. Also, they have enough experience to get you started without breaking the bank.

Secondly, train Classically. It will allow you to learn the techniques needed to perform all other types of music. You don't have to do Opera. There's a collection called "24 Italian Songs and Arias," from G. Schirmer press that is the standard that I use with my students. It not only helps cement the technique, but provides for introductory language work as well.

Plus, listen to great singers, and try to emulate what you hear.

Finally, singing should feel comfortable not strained. Try to imagine it being more like elongated speech than what we think singing to be. It makes for less pitch problems, longer phrases and more comfort. If you feel sever discomfort while singing, STOP! Don't push it, you could hurt yourself.

Drink mainly water. Try not to eat alot of dairy or sugear as they stick up your throat. Look into Aloe Juice to refresh your voice too. Two shots a day is all you need and your voice will feel new in a few days.
