The patch on the left shoulder signifies the current Major Command or Unit of assignment. This patch is authorized for Major Commands (MACOMS), Armies, Corps, Regional Reserve Commands, U.S. Army Reserve Commands, Divisions, Corp Support Commands, and Seperate TOE Brigades, to name just a few.
Interestingly enough, the soldier has the right to decide which patch to wear, if authorized more than one. The correct way to say "combat patch" is "shoulder sleeve insignia former wartime service". This patch is authorized for all soldiers who served in a combat theater declared by the Secretary of the Army or higher or a Delcaration of War by Congress. This patch is worn on the right side of the uniform.
If a soldier has two combat tours in two different units, he/she as the option of wearing the patch of either unit of assignment. Further, the soldier has to option of not wearing anything on the right shoulder.

The patch on the left side of the uniform is the patch of your current unit, the one you are stationed with currently. The patch on the right side represents the unit you went to war with. Some chose not to wear the patch on the right side. Its not required, the patch on the left side however, is required. Hope that helps!

You wear the patch of your current unit on your left shoulder. You wear a "combat patch" (the patch of a unit with which you deployed to a war zone) on your right shoulder. Some people have many combat patches, some have none.

The reason for different patches is that once a soldier has served in combat he/she is authorized to wear that unit patch on the right shoulder while current unit assignment is worn on the left shoulder. When soldiers are new to the military you will only see one unit patch on left shoulder which is current unit assignment.

The one of the left side of the uniform is for the current battalion that they serve in. Now the one on the right, which if they have thier uniform correct, will be below the US Flag is for the battalion that they have had Combat Experiance with. That is why they call it a "Combat Patch".
