Just sit him in your lap and hold your arms around his arms so he can't hit towards the culture. Promise him a treat if he does good.

Ask your son to take a swab and get a throat culture for you. Tell him that he was a good doctor for mommy when he touches the swab to the back of your tongue. Then, when he see's his pediatric doctor, introduce him... then, he may know what to expect and calm down a little more.

I'm a nurse. Depending on how old he is, we use a papoose. It is used to restrain little ones and it works well. You could hold him also. I would ask for them to get another nurse to assist. This way your son isn't mad at you. I used that way with my kids so I could be their hero, or saving them from that bad nurse. I hope this is useful to you, good luck.

It only takes a second to get the culture. Hold him around his chest and arms and put one arm around his head. I've been through this before!

Retraining him will do nothing but scare him and make him fight harder.... I know its not the best way but bribe him (e.i If you do this then i will get you icecream.) You have to make sure you follow through with it though or it will never work again. Another way is maybe let the dr. do it to you first to show him how easy it is and that it won't hurt.

I think pediatricians recommend that you sit him on your lap. That way you're not in the way of their procedure, you have a good hold on him, and it seems like you're hugging him, which may reassure him.
