I had to go to my Aunts funeral a couple of years back i lived in a small village so everyone pretty much knew everyone else the vicar was told by my sister that i am a Wiccan at the church the vicar shook everyone's hand except mine when it came to me he placed his hand behind his back why what was he afraid of it didnt bother me but it did some people at the funeral who were christians, all through the funeral i was in the front pew and he was watching me but everytime i went to make eye contact it looked like he was afraid of something.
Was this an appropiate reaction to some who has lost a relative what did he really fear ??

All religion is small-minded, Vicars are no exception, they are simply Christians who get paid ! Christians are conditioned to fear, avoid, on occasions to hate; anything that does not fit their truth. You (as a Pagan), would unsettle the narrow minded thinking of most organised religions, young people with their own thoughts who do not NEED Vicars, buildings, books, but can find their own truth, in their own way. Don`t fret over it, Christianity has always feared free-thinkers. These days they do not burn them, they just look sheepish and afraid.

It wasn't appropriate, and from what I've been told by members of various clergy, wouldn't have been condoned by his church - entirely personal - but also, not the first instance of something like this happening at a family funeral that I've heard. Sad but true. You'd think people who are meant to be religious would practise a bit more tact and sympathy.

Em, vicars are usually CofE, not Catholic. It sounds to me like a misunderstanding on the part of the vicar. If it really didn't bother you, as you wrote, then why rehash the scene here for us 2 years after the fact? Most stress in interpersonal relationships is caused by misunderstanding/miscommunication.

More likely he was praying for you. And the hand shaking was a bit of paranoia.
