I'm currently living in the US, and I'm in the process of getting a green card. They approved me, but I still have to wait one more year before I get my papers. But I have a problem. I'm not allowed to leave the U.S. before I get my documents, because if I do then they'll deny my request and cancel my status. So right now I don't apply for an SSN, but I do have an ITIN. I need to get a job, but almost all companies ask for an SSN. Can I use my ITIN instead? It's still a tax payer number and it's perfectly valid on checks. And when I get an SSN, all the info from my ITIN will be converted on that number instead.

I'm Polish, actually.

I tried getting a work permit but they won't let me until I get my documents.

Okay this country makes no sense. They tell me that I'm forced to stay here until I become legal but until then I can't work, can't get an apartment, can't get a drivers license. . .I mean WTF am I supposed to do? Be a criminal to survive?

DAR, you have no idea what you're talking about. I TRADED my "visitor VISA" for a greencard. Having a VISA doesn't even have anything to do with being illegal or not, anyway. The government doesn't give "visitor VISAS" to people who want to be legal. A visa is a document to be able to travel. That makes no sense. I came here on my visa, but since it was currently being used as a tourist, I had to trade it.

I know that that number is used for banking purposes, my husband had a social security card that said "only valid with a work permit" before he became a citizen. They give work permits annually. In Chicago, there is a high Polish population as well and most of the people I know have these type of social security cards. You need to either check out the website or contact your local immigration office.

Nothing is wrong with this country you just have to abide with our process step by step. Seem to me you are going the wrong way in finding out details. Your assumption of the system is making you one frustrated person. Contact instead the INS and tell them what you need. Most employees would prefer SSN because it's ingrained in us. If so,proved to employers that the ITIN along with your work permit legally let's you get a job in the U.S. And also, if you want to leave the country, you can. INS can give you an 'Advance Parole' document that will entitle you to come back to the U.S. America is not going to hold anyone back just so you know.

I have to assume that when you applied to come you did not mention wanting to work, you got a visitor visa which does not allow residence. I think it is kind of rich to object to this 'obstacle' since it sounds like you were the one who created the problem. Did you ever intend to go back when you said you would?

I don't have any problem with your being here if you are doing it legally, but if you cut corners, you can expect them to cut back.

No, you have to request a special SSN for people that are in your case, and also a temporary work permit. When you get your temporary SSN it will have a legend saying that it's only for work purposes, but you can change this as soon as you get your papers. Good luck.

no... an ITIN does not give you permission to work.

You need to get an employment authorization document (EAD) from the immigration service. With an EAD, you can get a SSN.

just be sure you are approved for work in U.S, then go right ahead and use the ITIN. be sure to notify social security too, so that you get proper credit for your work.
undated- that's why they want you to have a job sponsor before you come over, or have a family member who can sponsor you.
