This question was asked recently. Look in the archives next time.

It is a myth that it's against the law to drive without footwear. However, you want to make a good impression with the examiner, so wear shoes. I am amazed at how gullible people are. But I'm not the least bit surprised that NOBODY has provided any citation to a law in the United States that prohibits driving without shoes. That should tell you something.

Please ignore my deranged thumbs-down stalker, who needs a hobby.

If the choice is a heeled shoe, or platform, or monster sole, or slippery thong, then taking the shoes off would be downright logical. There is no law against it, no police officer will ever take issue with it. Amazing how many people believe what they hear secondhand tho, as shown here.

Many of us race drivers (300ZXTT club days & targa) wear very thin fire booties. They almost feel like bare feet, definately give you a better indication of foot position. In my truck however, I wear steel caps boots!

I would recommend you find a comfortable pair of soft slip-ons that you keep in the car should you need them. If your shoes are laced, releasing some of the lace tension will make your feet a lot more comfortable over long drives..

I'm almost 100% sure it is against the law to drive barefoot, at least in NY. Each state is probably different. However, especially when in the summer and wearing flipflops that I always feel slip off my feet, or if I'm wearing platforms or something like that, I use logic. Safety comes before any law in my opinion. I would rather risk getting a ticket (which is highly improbable, unless the cop is looking down into your car. More than likely he won't even notice), then driving "legally" with shoes that are slipping off my feet and where I don't feel like I have control over the gas/brake. Many of times, I drove home from the beach barefoot. However, you really should be wearing shoes for the most part. Why are you uncomfortable driving without shoes?? Are you telling me in the middle of winter, in the middle of a blizzard (which would be unsafe driving situation anyway, but hypothetically...), and your all bundled up in your boots and everything, are your really going to want to take off your boots and drive barefoot??? Wouldn't your feet be cold?? Something tells me you got into this habbit because of your mother, but parents are not always right. I could understand being comfortable driving barefoot, and as previously stated, might in some cases, be a safer alternative. However, I don't think it will kill you to wear shoes either. That's the way 99% of the population drives -- with shoes!!! At least grin and bear it for the test, or else you will never pass. Believe me on that one!! Even if where you live, it isn't a law, it will be looked down upon. ANd what if your feet stink?? You'll surely fail then, lol.. So at least for the test wear them, after that do what you feel comfortable doing. Again, no cop is even going to know if your barefoot or not, unless your doing something else to get pulled over for first, then notices after he pulls you over. And word of advice in that situation, don't quickly put your shoes on, cuz then if he sees you doing that, its drawing attention to yourself, or he might even think your reaching for something else next to you. Best not to make any sudden moves around a cop. Best to keep your shoes off, and act natural, and maybe he won't notice. And if he does, again cite safetly. Say, "Yes officer I realize its illegal, but I felt it was safer driving barefoot then with platforms where I cant even feel the pedal." And he might even realize your maturity and let you off the hook with that. But make sure they're really platforms!! IF he sees a pair of sneakers in the seat next to you that might not go over so well!!!!

Wear your shoes for the test. After you have your license then drive without them. I always take my shoes off to drive.

It is against the law to drive without shoes on. I got a ticket for speeding and driving with no shoes. You have to wear shoes during the test, so just find a pair that you will be comfortable wearing.

It is against the law to drive without shoes on. What if you are in an accident or have an emergency situation & have to jump out of the vehicle in a hurry. Do you want to have the soles of your feet shredded or be denied entrance into a place? If you don't like driving with shoes on, wear a pair of sandals or flip flops. They are as close to barefoot as you can get without violating the law & putting yourself at risk.

Yes, a police friend told me it is against the law if they catch you without your shoes on driving for emergency purposes or incase you get in a wreck. I certainly wouldn't suggest taking your test without shoes. Driving instructors that give those tests are known to be very nice anyways.
