Some States have already banned Pitbulls.

EDIT: Where do you people get your info? They are not an aggressive breed. For those saying better the pitbulls die then a kid when all breeds have been banned will you be happy. (you are aware that a Pomeranian killed a baby) Banning certain breeds is not going to solve the problem because the same moron that had a vicious dog will just go get a different breed of dog. More has to be done to punish the irresponsible owners that own agrressive dogs or owners that do not train their dogs.
fucose_man : I happen to adore German Shepherd Dogs and they do not have a mean streak, you really should not base you opinion on one incident.

Yes and I have been signing the petitions and writing letters to the government to stop it. What most people do not know is that they are trying for Breed Specific Legislation and Pit Bulls are NOT the only breed on the list. It is a bunch of B.S because the dogs are NOT the problem the people are. And if you ban all the Pits the fighters will just find another breed to exploit. We need to go after the irresponsible dog owners and breeders and not a dog. And yes in some areas they can go in and take someones beloved pet. We have one Pit and he is the biggest baby in the entire world, my Lab is his boss. And my Lab is more of a guard dog the the Pit. Its is all how the dog is raised and the innocent should not be punished for the idiots.

No, usually, just no new ones.
Overland Park, KS (Voted second richest county per capita in 2005) Just started passing legislation to ban pit bull terriers because all the richies are scared of the bad rap they've gotten. As someone who can speak from a view of actual risk, (I'm in the insurance industry.) I can tell you that there is a list of about 25 dogs that some companies will turn you down for liability insurance for, and that yes, pit bulls are on there, but so are many other dogs. Some include dogs used to "protect" us, like the German Shepard that police are fond of using, the Cocker Spaniel - a family favorite and also the #1 biter, Dobermans, Dalmations, the list goes on. Just because people have found a tough dog and started to treat them bad and make them mean, they've gotten a bad reputation and are now being punished and discriminated against.

I live in Canada and some Provinces have put a ban on pit-bulls and any dog that resembles one. I don't think the dog has to be put down unless in attacks someone. I know there is 0 tolerance for an offense. The dog must be put down. You have to register your dog if it resembles a pit-bull and breeding is not allowed. I love all dogs and used to work for a vet. Some of the best behaved dogs in the clinic were pit-bulls and some of the worst behaved were sheep dogs and schnauzers. I believe it's all in how you raise them.

First things first to all those who support a ban on Pit bulls do you know statistically how may ppl are killed each year by pit bulls on average... 3 yeah thats all dont get me wrong its very sad but no one is talking about banning cars they kill more ppl every hour anyway we need to enforce the laws that are already on the books stop the fighters and anyone comitting acts of cruelty and i garanteee you will see some changes but that wont happen it costs too much money to enforce those laws so lets kill all the dogs makes sence right.

Sadly, it isn't the dogs' fault (nor the breed's), but the irresponsible owners who get them SPECIFICALLY for protection but know nothing about training or are just too lazy to do it. This can actually happen with ANY breed (turning them into dangerous animals), but I think people see pit-bulls as "scarier".

Most cities and towns are overrun with dogs as it is and don't have the funds to go around educating ignorant owners, so what else can they do to protect the public, especially children, if owners won't properly train their dogs? It's not fair to the dogs, but I'd put kids first.

Hopefully dog-owners of ALL breeds will learn something from this!

We've come a long way from The Little Rascals haven't we? Back then their pit bull was considered to be cute. It is sad that a bad reputation has been given to the breed due to improper training, improper care, neglect, and abuse. Properly cared for, a pit bull is no more aggressive than any other breed of dog.

In most cases, these laws do not apply to existing animals. However, one wrong move from your pitbull and it's outta there.

I love dogs/cats too, but I don't understand why people get pitbulls/rottweilers and even german shephards. YES I know they CAN be good pets, but they have a mean streak which sometimes comes out of nowhere. My mother in law had a pitbull/rottweiler mix for years and the thing was sweet as anything, until one day it decided to go nuts on my then 14 year old daughter. My daughter had to run away from it and lock herself in the bathroom and over the next hour the dog tried to scrape her way through the door. She was SO terrified she screamed out the window until someone called the police who came and had to shoot the dog.
Honest.

um yeah this has been a fear ridden witch hunt for sometime now. and yes they are not only making them get rid of the pits, but they are automatically euthanising them in some cities. yes it's very sad. and what's even worse is the type of person usually that ownes the pits that are being labeled as bad are just going out and getting another "bad" breed of dog. it won't end until the educated stand up and fight for laws stopping these humans from owning pets. many other breeds are attacking people, pets and children, you just don't hear about them on the news because it doesn't get ratings. no one wants to believe a golden will kill a toddler. it's uneducated propaganda that the uneducated will argue until you pass out from their lack of knowledge.

I can completely understand your situation. I had a boston terrier that I had to put down for heart worms, so I can understand that. Although...I can also understand the banning of certain types of breeds. Where I am from the pit-bull breed is for fighting, which is illegal but it happends. It is also a law to keep a dog on a leash...doesn't happen 80% of the time here. Also I'm sure it is a law to keep your dog in your yard...There again...doesn't happen.. I agree that it is not only the Pit-Bull breed...but you gotta start somewhere I guess. Good luck though!!
