Thanks for being concerned. All dogs, mainly those with a heavy coat, can get aclimated to being outside when cold. German Sheps have a double coat and can withstand pretty cold weather if otherwise healthy. If your dog is a inside/outside dog and has gotten use to the weather changes he should be fine. Would suggest you use cedar shavings instead of blankets for several reasons. Blankets can get really wet, nasty and freeze. Shavings are easier to clean out/ add fresh/helps with doggie odor and fleas.

You will need to check water bowl very often if freezing temps. Dogs that stay out will need at least twice as much food to keep a fat layer and stay warm. Dogs are smart. They will seek shelter as need to, especially if freezing rain, snow. It is best to have a inside place he can be if weather gets severe. Days and days of extremely cold weather/no sunshine makes the ground and doghouse colder.

Some dogs can get too hot inside when we people turn up the heaters. I have 2 that often want to stay out all nite but they have shelter under a big pine that keeps the ground almost dry, even in a bad rain. They all come in and out as they want. They do have doghouses they can use, usually won't. Silly dogs. Some enjoy rain and cold more than others.

The main issue is that he is still getting your attention and is being played with inside/outside. That if bad weather/storm you would bring him in, especially if he is barking non stop to alert you that he wants inside. The inside option should always be available to him. To any pet! He will let you know-- if you are listening and paying attention to him.

Your dog will be fine, I have two dogs and the female has a double coat and the male doesn't, I feel sorry for him when it's really cold outside and I can't bring him in the house. They both have their own dog house that they use. I fill their houses with wood chippings you would put in a hamster cage. It's soft and it keeps them warm. I buy the big bags of stuff.

If you have straw or blankets in the dog house....he will be fine.....dogs are not stupid...if he gets cold then he will go in the dog house......just make sure you check his water every know and then to make sure it don't freeze and don't leave him in the kennel all the time.....take him out for at least a couple hours a day and play with him.

If its an original breed as with the name its GERMAN and its really cold in germany, so that dog has a very think skin and lots of hair if he does not have a hair loss problem then its fine for him to stay out !!! but if you notice his walk. if he is having an abnormal walk when you take him out, then he is having some problems with the cold. Give him boiled eggs !!!

How would you like to sleep in the cold. They are domesticated animals, let him in the damn house!! Why did you get a dog if you don't want it around you?

Yes they get cold and their water freezes out there also. They are supposed to have a thick layer of straw out there for insulation in dog houses. But better for them to be inside. They can guard the house better inside too.

Yep, he'll be fine all the way down to around 10 degrees. The person who made the point that since he did'nt go in the dog house he is'nt cold, is correct.

Dunno where these folks are coming from saying he'll be cold, he's built to live outdoors.

Cold weather and pets don't mix.

They're subject to the same types of things that happens to people.

They get hypothermic and their metabolism gets way down and they can die.

Small dogs and puppies are especially delicate. They lose body heat quickly.

He's probably cold!

If it's cold to you, it's probably cold to him--even with the fur coat. Bring the poor thing inside.

Well, if he refuses to go in the dog house, then it must be ok. If he was freezing, he would probably go into the dog house, even if he didn't want to
