They can do a basic hearing test, enough to give you a referral to a doctor to have it tested and see what kind of hearing loss it is.

Public schools DO basic hearing evaluations from K-2nd grade, at least in Florida. That's how I found out my K daughter was having problems. After several visits to her regular Ped, and a referral to an Ear/Nose/Throat doctor, she had to get tubes. Hearing screenings usually happen during the fall semester and many school clinics have the machine to do it. If not, go to your regular pediatrician and he can do the basic screaning as well. Check with your insurance company because you might not be covered if you go straight to an audiologist without a referral from your ped.

If you think your son has a hearing problem then it is up to YOU as the parent to have him tested. The "evaluations" the schools give are extremely basic and rudimentary the ones at the doctor's offices are more precise.

I suggest go to an audiologist for a hearing test, since schools do not test kids for hearing impairment or any other type of disabilities. It will cost you a little bit, unless your insurance plan will cover it or audiologist will accept it. You can ask your doctor for referrals to an ear, nose, throat specialist or audiologist for a hearing test. If your child is hearing impaired in any way, please take the audiologist's advice on all the help the child needs or your child will missed out a lot of things which will affect their way of life later on in life as they get older. Good luck.

Schools sometimes give the evaluation. I've helped out while it was being done at my son's school. But if you're so worried why aren't you taking him to the doctors? Why wait around for someone else to take care of it. It's your son, take him to the doctor. I wouldn't wait, it may get to the point where it can't be fixed. Why are you waiting for someone else to take care of your child???

Schools no longer do even a basic hearing test. Start with your pediatrician and they will direct you to the next level. It could be something as simple as wax or a foreign body in the ear(s) that you aren't aware of. You are right to investigate though, and to do it early. Good luck!

In Texas, the schools do.... even some daycares do it before Kindergarten. Not sure where you are located, though. I would ask the school and if not, your doctor can.

Any concerns should be addressed to your pediatrican. Though they can run certain basic exams in his office, he/she can refer you to a specialist if needed. Consult your child's school, after you discuss things with his doctor.
