Autocad itself isn't a design program. You can't enter certain variables for an item and click for a design of a connecting rod. It is a design tool used to make a working drawing of the item you are designing. It is getting better and becoming more of a design tool in my area, civil engineering, with Civil3D. But up until now, you had to have additional software with design aids.

AutoCAD itself is simply a drafting program by Autodesk. Autodesk also sells software applications that interact with AutoCAD to help model buildings, structures, cars, widgits, pretty much anything. Autodesk has several branches that deal with different industry segments, including manufacturing, infrastructure, building and even media and entertainment.
Using those other applications you can actually design things in addition to just drawing or drafting. For example, Autodesk's Civil 3D program is based on AutoCAD but adds functions to help lay out roads, subdivisions, lots, etc. To do cars or other manufacturing items, they have other applications such as Inventor, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.
