During the time of the old testament, the people would give 10% of what they grew, made, etc. in order to help pay for the temple and feed the priests. This tradition has continued, although I don't believe 10% is an exact number. You should give what God puts on your heart to give. For someone that makes $6000 a month and has no family $600 isn't going to hurt them as much as a family of 5 paying $200 and raking in only $2000 a month.

Because in the OT the law says one-tenth of your income is given to God(His church). In the NT Jesus says give from your heart and give cheerfully from your heart. So I guess it depends on the church you go too.I still believe you should give 1/10 of income. It's just right.I mean you don't have to do it every Sun. I at least give 1/10
3 Sun out of 4.

One tenth or a "tithe" is the traditional amount of a church offering. They can ask, but it doesn't mean you have to give that much. It's just a hopeful suggestion on the part of the church.

Its called "giving back to God" what he has entrusted you with. He only asks for 1/10 but it ALL belongs to Him. He just wants you to help with building His kingdom by supporting the church of your choice in their efforts to house the homeless, feed the hungry, and yes, the preacher gets a salary because his job IS the church and he spends his time counselling, preaching, studying, visiting the sick, prison ministries, etc. Of course the basic needs of the church must also be met, otherwise you would have no where to go; electric bill, water, heat, air, chairs, bibles, mortgage, etc...

tithing= 1 tenth. from scripture therefore alot of churches ask for 1 tenth of your income. the money in most churches is generally put to good use, such as charities, maintaining the building and the pastor also gets some for his services to the parish. the catholic church does not make demands on how much to give, you give as much or as little as you want or nothing at all. it is up to you. likewise the collection inthe catholic church is used for charities, the parish etc......the tithing is old testament however and was giving to the temple, we are not bound by the old testament laws anymore so i think most churches will accept whatever you give them. remember jesus taught about the rich people giving so much money to the collection for recognition etc.....but the one he pointed out to his apostles was ther woman who gave the last few pennies she had, telling them truly that the woman had given more than any other person in the temple that day, this applies also to faith and is a valuable lesson.

They ask you to tithe (which means 1/10)
An offering is giving above and beyond the tithe.
In the bible it says to give 1/10 of your stuff to God.

God required the first fruits of their labors in the old Testament. It is 10% of what we earn. People still give God a tithe and God will use it towards many needs in various areas ministry in the church.

CERTAIN religious organizations, as, for example, the Adventists, Mormons, etc., insist on taxing their members one-tenth (or tithe) of their annual income for support of their respective church systems
demands are in accord with the tithing laws given to ancient Israel
The first mention of tithes in the Bible is found at Genesis 14:20, where it tells about the patriarch Abraham giving Melchizedek, the king of Salem and priest of the Most High God, a tenth of the victory spoils obtained in a particular battle
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you will not find Jesus recommending or commending tithing for his followers
Jesus came to fulfill and put an end to the Law covenant and all of its ordinances by having it nailed to his torture stake, and at the same time his poured-out blood set in operation a new covenant with superior arrangements. (Col. 2:14-16)
Under such new system Christians are under new commandments that are summed up in total or complete love. They must therefore consecrate, not a tenth part, but everything they possess to God’s service and for the aid and comfort of good-will strangers among them.—Matt. 22:36-40.
Recall how Jesus commended the poor widow who gave two small coins, together worth about one-fourth cent. Not a mere tenth, but “all of what she had, her whole living”. (Mark 12:41-44)
The same principle was emphasized in Jesus’ parables, how a man finding a “treasure hidden in a field” sold everything, not a tenth part, and purchased the field
Jesus was not advocating tithing for Christians when he told the rich young man who had kept all the laws of Moses (including that of tithing) to sell the other nine-tenths of his wealth to help the poor and then follow Jesus (matthew 19:20-22)
Christians, begotten of the spirit of adoption, are sons of God, and as sons are under the new covenant, and they present their all to the Lord. (Rom. 8:14-17; 12:1)
Instead of being required to give a specified amount to defray congregation expenses, therefore, Christians make voluntary contributions.(not obligatory)
if obligatory (tithe) not in harmony with>>>>“Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”—2Â CORINTHIANS 9:7.

the original tithe was when Abraham gave it to Melchizedik king of Salem, which means King of Peace. it says he was a priest of God Most High. This basically means that God sent an angel to Abraham then, because there were no priests yet.
