my gym is called sportsclub L.A. (not LA Fitness). they have 7 or 8 gyms across the country. a bit high end, but service is great. never a wait for equipment. staff is knowledgeable and helpful. lots of classes all day long and lots of variety (boxing, martial arts, yoga, pilates, aerobic, spinning, etc.)

i tend to not go with major chains, but more of the local places.

i don't recommend 24 hour fitness in the least. i had major troubles - they charged my credit card the wrong amount, wouldn't let me put my membership on hold after knee surgery, and the equipment there wasn't clean. the showers were gross!

of the major chains, i'd recommend bally's. i like their approach - nutrition, exercise, etc all together. they have a team you work with. major plus!

the gym i go to now is pretty laid back. it's huge which can be good or bad. parking can be a pain, but i don't go at the normal "busy" times so it doesn't matter much to me. the pools are wonderful, there is a kids centre, too. it's expensive, but it's worth it to me. i can take any of the 200+ classes (most no extra cost) they offer a few free training sessions and have a nutritionist availble to us, too.

my best gym experience was at the YMCA back home in MD.
it had great classes and convenient times. the locker rooms were clean and fresh, so were the showers. the weight room was very adequate and only corwded at the beginning of the year, like any gym, and then tapered off.

i loved it and i miss it.

gold's isn't too bad. i would just go to various ones and ask about trial memberships. many places will give you a trail or you can pay on a day by day basis to check it out.

take care!

Most gyms will give you a three day pass if you say you are thinking of joining. Use the pass and ask members how they like the place. Hang out in the sana and ask members.
I just joind a gym that has tv's on all the cardio. It makes for a more interesting work out.

I belong to 24 hour fitness and I like that it is alway open but the people that work their are very pushy when you try to hire a personal trainer. I also have sent friends there and the salepeople were very pushy with them, too. they try and sell you into very expensive training programs. Other than that, it is a great gym.

i worked out at YMCA...it was nice and had plenty to suit my needs...mostly I just used the treadmills, because I am clueless when it comes to the free weights and just stick to push ups and handweights at home... the pool and hot tub were nice, and they always had lots of classes you could sign up for. However, once I worked out at a super nice gym that had great motivating music playing throughout, and i ran farther and faster and I missed it when I went back to the Y~

I go to 24 hr fitness...they' re pretty good and they offer a wide variety of classes. Some of the gyms have pools and saunas-that's pretty cool.
