No. People should be able to volunteer to die not be forced to fight for something they don't believe in.

Nope because he needs congressional approval for it. It won't happen because everybody serves and goes to war these days. IRR isn't the safe haven it once was. National Guard units are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. If there was a draft, think of how many Senators' and Congressmembers' children would get caught up in it. Their sons and daughters would die along with the rest of society's children. Look at what happened in Vietnam. A draft then caused a "hollow Military" which eroded the Military's values and destroyed morale. No, a draft won't happen anytime soon, even though more tropps are needed.

In order to accomplish his planned escalation, Bush will need to extend troops and redeploy reserve and Guard Units that have recently served. The military is already stretched beyond the limit. On the other hand if activates the draft there will be huge protests and public backlash. Rich people will be just as likely to serve as the poor and disadvantaged. I guess he kind of painted himself into a corner.

A draft isn't needed right now and probably won't be required. They have former military members in what is known as the IRR. After they get out, they can still be called up for a few years. Those guys are still sitting at home (for the most part) so we're safe.

Also, I think a draft is unsafe. It puts people who do not want to be in the military next to those that do. I for one, wouldn't want some guy who is pissed at the government watching my hubby's back!

The military draft can be a good thing. It ensures that not only volunteers enlist, but that the sons of the rich and famous also go do their duty. Yes some can and do get out of it like Bill Clinton and some get great duty like our President Bush did during Vietnam.

The draft is about as fair a system as we can get. Should our country rely on the "real good guys" who enlist to do their duty to God, country and Corps? Should we rely on men and women who enlist to get the benefits of an education and try to skate out of combat? Should we rely on those that John Kerry referred to in his no infamous speech who just get stuck in Iraq?

We need smart, dedicated and competent people and some of them can only be gotten by the draft. Not very many football players actually give up a million dollar contract to "do their duty".

Yes the draft is good and we should reinstate it. My son enlisted, did his tour in Iraq, and is now a fine law enforcement officer as a civilian. I enlisted for the benefits - then I grew up and stayed 20 years and did my duty. There are all kinds and it takes all kinds to protect our country.

No, America is one of the only countries in the world that military service is not required, and that is a good thing. The draft is unfair and should also include women to make it fair.

No because we have enough troops now. Even if it doesn't look like it we got plenty of troops. They haven't done the draft in so many years.
