I am going off to school and have a laptop I can watch and record TV on, and a regular TV. I want to be able to record something on my laptop if I'm gonna be away from the dorm and have it where my roomate can watch what he wants on the TV.

you need a splitter.
hook the cable connection into the splitter and each of the outgoings can go into different locations. I have my living room tv, my bedroom tv and my computer all hooked up through one connection. I can watch all the same tv vhs or DVD or i can watch differnt shows it's my choice. go to an electronics department or store they will explain in full detail.

Wait i read your additional information... does the video card on the laptop have a tuner? if yes do the following if no read on to the next section.

More simple just get a two way splitter from radio shack.

http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=splitter&origkw=splitter

you also nees to have 2 extra cords of coaxial cable to connect both tvs to the splitter and the one you have goes from the outlet to the slitter (foms a "Y")

If it doesn't tune by itself you need to get a seperate tuner, or you can use the feed from the tv (but it will only record what the tv is showing) you have to look to see what video output the tv has and hope it is compatible with you laptop.

Guess I need to know more information here, what kind of video input does you laptop take to view video?

OK OK you need another tuner for sure I read the rest of your question. get a tuner box from you cable provider or try to get one at retail. BUT your video card may have a tuner built into it and then you just split the signal and you are good to go

Use a splitter. I had one, for a while for my cable and cable broadband connections. It works!
