will it have any adverse effects? or can you only charge batteries marked rechargable?

Yes you can but don't expect anything good to happen. The chemical reaction in non-rechageable batteries is non-reversible so once the chemicals are used up the batteries can't be revived.

Also, there are several non-compatible rechargeable battery technologies out there so it is VERY IMPORTANT that the charger and batteries are made for each other.

it will also cause your batteries to heat up and most likely explode ..also when using re chargable batteries you have to make sure you have the right charger for the type of battery your using
