OK, so I haven't been to the dr. yet but I want to know what I'm in for. I have the really sore back and my whole left leg hurts down to the arch. I've read a little about it--does it really come and go? Do any exercises help? Drugs? Surgery? What is your experience with it and what can I expect? What helps and what doesn't?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, don't go for any injections, drugs or surgeries before you exhaust all your other, safer, less invasive options. Sciatica is almost always caused by a physical stress, i.e., bad biomechanics in your lower lumbar spine and/or pelvis. As such it will respond best to a physical solution. This is the niche of the chiropractic physician if I ever heard of one. The track record of chiropractic is far better than that of drugs or surgery... not only that , but is really the only true solution to your problem. Drugs and injections will just fool your body into thinking there is no problem (like putting a piece of duct tape over your check engine light when it goes on). You may not be aware of it when you on drugs, but your spine and spinal nerves are as sick as ever. Spinal surgery is extremely violent and usually (70%) fails, and will result in a second surgery. I'm not saying that you won't need surgery, I don't know, but give your body a chance to solve this problem and keep all of its parts.

You will need some advanced imaging procedure to get a good diagnosis. This means MRI (weight bearing if available in your town). For this you do not need a MD referral, your chiropractor can order this MRI and will probably do a better Job reading the film than the MD. You also need no referral to see the chiropractor to begin with .

I noticed someone else suggested to see an orthopedic surgeon. If you do decide to see a MD specialist for some, crazy reason, don't go to an orthopedic surgeon. You want a neurosurgeon for spinal surgeries. Most orthopods would be more than happy to do the surgery... I wouldn't let them. Knee replacement sure... spinal surgery, give me a neurosurgeon.

I am not so sure on a Chiropractor. Everyone I have ever known has to keep going back. They do not get better. They seem temporarily fine, but then have to go back. I have sciatica. I went to my GP. She referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. They said that they do not like to recommend surgery because it does not always work. She referred me to a physical therapist. They explained a lot to me and how to keep from getting it again. They said eventually I would because of my deterioration, but I can prevent a lot. Did a lot of different exercises. Not the ones they typically tell you for a back. I could not do those twist and turn ones. I was given a prescription for steroids, pain meds, and muscle relaxers. Last time, I didn't get better until I was given steroids. You need the drugs to get through the pain you are in now and the steroids to get you better. After that you can do physical therapy. See your GP and get your referrals from there. If you don't like the answer from your doc, get another one.

There could be many different causes, like a herniated disk, compression of the sciatic nerve, etc.

The best thing to do is go to an orthopedic surgeon or even a general practicioner and see if they can find the cause. You may need an x-ray or MRI to determine what that is.

I had sciatica and physical therapy helped me. My husband had it due to a herniated disk and needed surgery. Definitely go to a doctor and have it checked out.

Just get the surgery. If you don't now, you will eventually. Why suffer for a longer period of time than is necessary. You have to act. Your doctor will at first tell you to take tylenol or a pain reliever...tell him the pain is so bad that it doesn't help at all.

Eventually the doc's going to suggest surgery.
