If you're talking about the inverted "V", that marking was first used in the Gulf War to identify Coalition vehicles from enemy vehicles. In that war we had allies fighting with us who were using the same vehicles as the Iraqis, so we had to come up with a way to identify the good guys from the bad guys.

The situation is pretty much the same now, so the inverted "V" is still being used for the same reason.

The above is true but we used to always say that it was to indicate which way should the vehicle drive and which side should be down.
